The Emergence of the Gaming Industry in Sri Lanka: Challenges and Opportunities…
Starting an indie game company in Asia, specifically in Sri Lanka, can present a unique set of challenges. Unlike before, Sri Lanka is now putting effort into entering the game development world. While the gaming industry in Asia is growing rapidly, there are several common issues that entrepreneurs might face.
1. Infrastructure and Technology:
In some parts of Sri Lanka, it may be difficult or costly to get fast internet and modern technology, which could make creating and sharing games challenging. Similarly, this issue can also affect game development in certain other Asian countries.
2. Funding and Investment:
Getting the initial funds for a startup can be tough, especially in areas where there aren’t many investors experienced in the gaming field. On the other hand there may be limited access to venture capital or angel investors familiar with the gaming industry.
3. Talent Acquisition:
Like I talked about in a previous article, in places where the gaming industry is still growing, it might be hard to find skilled game developers, designers, and artists. This can make it tough to attract and keep talented people on board.
4. Market Understanding and Localization:
It’s important to grasp the local market and cultural subtleties when creating games for specific audiences. Neglecting proper localization might restrict the game’s popularity and impact, especially in Sri Lanka and other Asian regions.
5. Difficulties with regulations and legal matters:
Dealing with legal obligations and rules associated with the gaming sector, like copyright and intellectual property laws, can be intricate. It’s crucial to follow local laws and safeguard the company’s intellectual property rights.
To overcome these challenges, it is crucial to conduct thorough market research, build a strong network within the local gaming community, and consider forming partnerships with established companies or organizations in the gaming industry. Additionally, fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment can help attract and retain talented individuals, fostering innovation and growth within the company.
Furthermore, making connections with international game developers, participating in gaming convention events, and building networks is crucial. Many international companies are willing to sponsor new gaming ventures, presenting significant opportunities for growth and development.
